A revolution in learning technology has taken place. Actually, it took place a few years ago, and I’m only just now catching up. The reason is that no one connected the dots for me, and I guess I’m a bit slow.

That’s the value added I’m giving you here today. I’m connecting the dots for you, in case you haven’t yet made the connection.

MP3 players have become huge business. The most popular of these, of course, is the IPOD, but you can find many other brands with lots of different features to select from.

They mainly get used for entertainment purposes - listening to music on the go, hearing podcasts by your favorite artists, and so forth.

But the real revolution for upwardly mobile people is in having portable education that you can take with you most anywhere.

I got, as a birthday gift, Creative’s MuVo TX FM. If you get this one, and if you have ears anything like mine, be prepared to spend another $10 to get a decent set of headphones, because the ones that come with it physically hurt my ears. Not permanently - just a bit of temporary pain. And since I’m not into avoidable pain, I went to my local Radio Shack and got their “Three-In-One” package - which includes 3 sets of headphones for, like I said, about $10.

OK - so having an MP3 player is “dot” number 1.

“Dot” number 2 is that you can find huge numbers of MP3 audio files for instruction on almost anything. And you can download these files to your computer. And from your computer, you can transfer these files to your MP3 player.

For example, from one of the membership sites I in which I participate, there is an mp3 file of an interview of Brian Keith Voiles, an acknowledged master copywriter. I’ve had that file on my computer for ages. Never got around to lisening to it.

Now it’s on my little MuVo and I’ve started listening while - well, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s go to …

“Dot” number 3 is that you can get an adaptor (I got mine, again from Radio Shack) to let you play these audio files in your car over your stereo speakers.

Beautiful!

Now as I drive around doing errands, I can absorb in the convenience of my car, wihtout breaking any laws, information from copywriting experts or from self-help coaches, and more.

I spend a fair amount of time in the car, so this really increases my productivity.

But we’re not done yet…

“Dot” #4 - My little MuVo enables me to go to bed, and continue listening as I drift off into the Land of Nod … without disturbing my wife!

I can walk around the house, go work out, and all kinds of other sundry things - and continue learning.

Finally - the unit I bought also enables me to record ideas on the fly and play them back. I haven’t fully tested this yet, so I’m not sure about the audio quality - is it suitable for playing to you on my website? I’ll be experimenting and report back to you.

The MuVo that I got costs about $149 plus whatever tax and shipping applies. Add the new headphones (a must, I’m sad to say) and the car adaptor, and you’re looking at a total expenditure of about $180.

That may seem like a fair amount of money, but if you spend a lot of time doing mentally deadening things like driving around doing errands or working out while the gym plays the latest in so-called music so that you can’t think - well, this may be an incredible value.

I can recommend the MuVo (depsite the headphones), but shop around. Lots of folks vouch for the iPod. And others for something called Zen. You’ll find lots of options, including price. Something is bound to work for you.

And once you have it - watch out. You’re brain may just explode with the new wealth of information you’ll be painlessly absorbing.

First a little history….
In 1938, the first invention that would lead to the laser printer and toner cartridge was patented. The process, knows as “electro photography”, used a dry printing method, not that different than today’s laser printer. It was 1948, however, before the commercial application of electro photography because available.

In 1959, the first automatic reproduction machine, the Xerox 914, which used a dry printing process. In 1978, the fine tuned technology was applied to the computer printing needs of business and private citizens. Physically large and with a large price tag as well, the Xerox 9700 laser printer that used a toner cartridge wasn’t affordable by individuals except the wealthy.

Everything changed in 1984 when Hewlett Packard began to market the “LaserJet” printer. This printer came with a replaceable toner cartridge that was not difficult to change, although it could sometimes bit a little messy. The really problematic part was that people who used the LaserJet had stacks of expensive but empty toners stacked in the storage room or wherever they could find to store the toner cartridges.

This problem was quickly resolved by environmentally aware designers by re-manufacturing the laser toner cartridge. This significantly reduced the cost of using laser printers.

What’s happening today?….
Nowadays we have the luxury of having a laser printer on our desk at home if we want that type of printing. The as well as the initial outlay for the printer has become quite affordable and provides a unique, very professional looking print out.

Today, laser printers are manufactured by many companies and the price tag is only slightly more than the common ink printer (though colour laser printers are still quite expensive the gap is getting smaller). - Compatibles are actually a brand new cartridge manufactured to work in the same way (without breaking the trademark, copy protection laws) as the same original cartridge with the same machines. The benefit you gain from these is obviously cost savings with at times massive savings up to around 50%. The downside is they are not as environmentally friendly as remanufactured toners and there are the occasional failures and complaints about lower quality (though failure rates for the top companies making these are within industry norms and not significantly higher than those of the original manufacturers themselves)
- Remanufactured toners however are a little different as they take an empty original (it should have only been used ONCE) and fill it with toner. As long as you buy from a reputable retailer it will have also been checked to determine if parts need to be replaced as well as toner refilled. You also get good cost savings as you do with compatibles but the environment wins out big time as you helping ‘close the loop’ by reusing an empty original. Once again the same applies as above with quality and failures (both negligible in my experience as a retailer in this industry).

NOTE: Its worth making a special note here that disposing of empty toners is a problem worldwide as the plastic they’re made of takes so long to break down and the toxicity of the toner inside. In many countries today there are programs available where you can get rid of your empties without just throwing them in the bin. In fact if you hunt around you’ll probably find a company will pay you for them as they need a constant stream of empties coming through so they can remanufacture them.

Something to keep in mind….
When purchasing a re-manufactured laser toner cartridge, be sure to read the box carefully and ensure you are selecting the right toner cartridge. The first time you purchase a re-manufactured toner cartridge, the box may look entirely different or very plain because these inexpensive toners are often not packaged in fancy, colourful boxes like the name brands. But then they don’t cost what the name brand toners do, either.

The bottom line….
If you use a reputable retailer for your home/office supplies they should have a clear policy in place not only about faulty toners but what happens if a cartridge has somehow caused damage to your machine (this would be very unusual by the way). Under these circumstances this policy should give you a full warranty to have the equipment repaired ASAP at no cost to you.

With my clients when they ask what I suggest I always recommend they try a non-original to see for themselves the quality etc. In any case the trick is to be able to make an informed choice with someone you trust so at least if something goes wrong the people you bought from haven’t skipped the country.

So what is a DVD Burner useful for?

A DVD Burner is useful for when you are looking to copy or duplicate a DVD disc or to burn video files into DVD Format so they can be played on a home DVD player. DVD discs allow Gigabytes of Data to be burned to the disc, in some cases a whole hard drive of data, making a tempting choice to use as a data back-up tool.

One needs to remember though that you will need a DVD-ROM to have the ability to read the data that was burned onto the disc, if you are in a office environment and need to use the disc on multiple PC’s then this may cause an issue as most PC’s in an office don’t come installed with a DVD-ROM - if they do then it’s a waste of money on the IT departments part.

CD-R discs can either hold data or audio and can be read in almost any CD-ROM and if the CD-R is made into an audio disc then its possible to read the disc in a Hi-Fi or a car CD Player - you will need to make sure the drive has the ability to read CD-R media, most newer models of CD-Players are compatible to read CD-R media.

Another pro of CD-R’s and CD-RW’s is the fact that you can burn video files such as MPEG or AVI onto disc so that they can be read in a home DVD player - most newer models of DVD players are mutli-read compatible meaning they can recognize CD-R’s or CD-RW’s.

So as you can see a back-up made with a DVD Burner is less compatible than a back-up made from a CD-Burner -Think wisely before purchasing any form of data back-up and ask yourself what is your need and how will be used.
