Care Homes in Surrey Were Asked if It’s Ever Too Late to Build Muscle
The good news is simply that muscle can increase at all ages replying to exercise. In a critical study of weight lifting and older adults conducted with a hundred masculine and feminine inhabitants of care homes in Surrey ( age range : 72 to 98 years old ; average age 87 ), subjects lifted weights with their legs 3 times per week for ten weeks. At the end of the study, there had been a rise in thigh mass of 2.7%, walking speed increased 12%, and leg strength increased a huge 113%! In a corresponding study of adults 65-79 years old, subjects who lifted weights 3 times every week for a quarter increased their walking endurance by 38% ( from twenty-five mins to 34 mins ) without discernible increases in mass. “The most interesting facet of the study re ageing was that exercise and diet worked better in those partakers ages sixty and older, ” Dr. Salerno asserted.
She pointed out that life changes forestalled the illness at better rates than did the oral diabetes drug metformin, which was also tested in the programme.
