Poker Player Profile: Greg Raymer

Greg Raymer is mostly known for winning the main event of the 2004 World Series of Poker while wearing his now trademark eyeglasses that feature reflective lizard eyes. Before winning the WSOP, Raymer was a practicing attorney, who subsequently stopped practicing to play online poker full time. Despite being an unknown before the win, Raymer is considered a quality poker online player, unlike many of the no-name poker players who have won the event in recent years.

Raymer is commonly known by the nickname ‘Fossilman,’ as early in his career he would sell small, strange fossils to poker players that they could then use as chip protectors. The name, for better or for worse, thereafter stuck.

Raymer’s general process with the infamous eyeglasses is that he leaves them off when not in a hand, and then when electing to enter a pot, he puts them on. The glasses, while considered at this point, to many, rather cheesy, serve both to block his eyes and perhaps, in theory, throw his opponents off by looking strange.

Since the major win, Raymer has continued to show and perform well in other national poker events, and also spends some time teaching poker camps to help improve other players’ games.
