One of my favorite “reads” are almanacs. From the formerly named Information Please almanac to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, these handy paperback books contain a wealth of information on virtually any subject, particularly the more generalized tomes such as Information Please.

In November 2005, I visited my locally owned drugstore and found that they had free copies of Grier’s Almanac available for customers. Similar in design to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, I took a copy home with me.

Although not peppered with stories such as can be found in the Old Farmer’s Almanac, Grier’s contains the usual “zodiac” information which farmers in time’s past would rely on to help them determine when to plant. In addition, you can find information on daily weather predictions, a fishing calendar, an exhaustive list of holidays for the year, and interesting chronological information on events that happened on particular dates throughout history. In the back of the almanac is a section devoted to all kinds of classified ads.

As with most almanacs in this particular genre, Grier’s has its share of ads. Some are helpful and include ads for insurance and gardening, while others are bizarre and include ads for oils and candles to help make your opposing lawyer stupid. Okay, if it works than that is great!

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Grier’s is that 2006 represents their 200th anniversary edition. For two straight centuries the almanac has been published including throughout the Civil War period, a remarkable feat indeed.

Grier’s is written for the southern states only from Virginia to Texas. As mentioned, copies are free and can be found in many drugstores, feed and seed establishments, and retail outlets throughout the south. Annual circulation reportedly exceeds three million copies.

Avoiding Miami as a gateway airport - We have been asked for suggestions about avoiding Miami Airport. If your destination is southern Florida, it is hard to escape Miami. Fort Lauderdale is an excellent airport and very popular with passengers but does not have regular flights from Europe. It is easy to reach from other US airports, though, and has a good network of domestic flights to the Caribbean and some Latin American destinations. Quite apart from the hassle of using Miami, it is also a very expensive airport to fly to. It is around 4,400 miles from London, but Economy fares are completely out of line with prices to say, New York, which is 3,600 miles. When flights are being offered to New York for a little over £200, fares of £400 (from London) or more to Miami seem disproportionate. The problem is that New York (and other East Coast destinations) has high loads of expensive Business Class passengers, which allows airlines to offer much more competitive Economy fares. Miami is a very seasonal destination with a high demand for Economy tickets and much less demand for Business. Airlines could fill several extra jumbos to Miami during the peak winter months but will not add extra flights just to sell bargain Economy tickets.

Fares might be slightly lower to Orlando, but, if you are flying there, do be careful to see which airport you will be using, because only the main Orlando airport has a range of connecting flights; Sanford, which is used by many charter airlines, does not have connecting flights. The only other option is to fly to another US gateway and maybe buy a cheap ticket to Fort Lauderdale with one of the budget carriers, but this is likely to increase the overall price. Some US airlines try to sell seats to Miami via their East Coast hubs: we do not recommend this, but it might be worth looking to see if the carrier offers a similar fare to Fort Lauderdale, which might make the extra stop more acceptable. Passengers who have to make one connecting flight anyway could consider flying to a US hub and then connecting to Fort Lauderdale rather than Miami. Passengers in the North of England now have direct flights to Miami this winter as American Airlines has started a service from Manchester. Suggested prices are from London and not Scotland.

Bernard Cornwell is a master of storytelling in an age when content and plotting seems to have largely given way to style and feel.
For those unfamiliar with his work then there is no finer place to start than the warlord trilogy. It tells of the life of King Arthur through a narrator, Derfel Cadarn, who was with him throughout his life.

This is, of course, a subject that has been covered ad nauseum, Cornwell however manages such a different take on the legend that he rises above the rest.
Firstly, the books are simply a great read and to be enjoyed on a ‘page turner’ level. I personally believe a major factor in their success is that the sword and sorcery element, which runs throughout the Arthurian legends, is addressed fully but dealt with realistically. So called magical acts and amazing feats are explained in terms which we today understand as being perfectly rational but allowing us to understand how people of the time would be amazed. This gives a feeling of reality to the tale and coupled with the authors ever present eye for accurate historical detail, gives one the feeling of reading a true account rather than the usual fantasy tale.

It was a great disappointment when the recent King Arthur film was made that they did not base it on the Warlord Trilogy. Whilst a Lord of the Rings type trilogy of films would have been superb it was perhaps a little too much to hope for. The books could have been used to create a far superior film, an opportunity missed in fact.

The books are available on the secondhand market for next to nothing, start with The Winter King, you’ll not be disappointed.

The Grapes of Wrath is a novel by John Steinbeck that exposes the desperate conditions under which the migratory farm families of America during the 1930’s live under. The novel tells of one families migration west to California through the great economic depression of the 1930’s. The Joad family had to abandon their home and their livelihoods. The Grapes of Wrath combines Steinbeck adoration of the land, his simple hatred of corruption resulting from materialism (money) and his abiding faith in the common people to overcome the hostile environment. His body destroyed but his spirit is not broken. The method used to develop the theme of the novel is through the use of symbolism. As each symbol is presented through the novel they show examples of the good and the bad things that exist within the novel.

Throughout the novel there are several symbols used to develop the theme man verses a hostile environment. Each symbol used in the novel show examples of both extremes. Some represent man, that struggles against the environment, others paint a clear picture of the feelings of the migrants. As each symbol is presented chronologically through the novel, they come together at the end to paint a clear picture of the conditions, treatment and feelings the people (migrants) as they make there journey through the novel to the West.

Tiscali’s debts could soon force the shut down of its broadband services, a recent audit by Ernst and Young has revealed. The Italy based service provider has run into huge debts and unless it can enter into an agreement with its lenders, its future looks quite bleak, the audit report stressed.

Tiscali has been struggling for a long time and has run into repeated trouble ever since the economy has been in turmoil. Most recently, the company failed to renew its domain name, which led to the suspension of numerous webspace and email accounts of its subscribers, further denting consumer confidence in the company.

Despite financial constraints and a doubtful future, Tiscali has continued to expand its subscriber base, and in response to the audit, the company has issued a vehement opposition. It has however stated that it will be holding a shareholders meeting before May, where it will be proposing a plan to restructure its debts. Meanwhile, the company has assured that it will carry on with its operations in both Italy and the UK as usual.

1.8 million Tiscali broadband UK subscribers stand to lose their connections if the company does not soon get its act together, and the suppliers to the company are likely to be even more worried.

Fundraising efforts have hit new lows. More than half the charity fundraising organizations report that they raised less money last year than they did in 2007. The figures were reported at the New Orleans convention of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

The group had asked charity fundraising organizations to compare the two years. Earlier AFP surveys found that in good years, 60% of those responding reported raising more money than in previous years. For 2008, only 46% reported raising more money for their charities. This was worse than in 2002, when 49% of the fundraising groups reported bringing in less money than the year before.

That wasn’t the only discouraging news from New Orleans. The actual money brought in by these charity fundraising groups also dropped sharply. Two years ago, nearly a quarter of the charities increased their fundraising by 50% or more. This year, only 5% reported that type of a jump. The groups also saw drops across the board, regardless of cause, size or geographic region and in almost all types of donations and solicitation techniques, including big gifts, direct mail and special events. The only technique with a reported increase in 2008 was online solicitation.

Charities are particularly concerned because the economic downturn has made the need for their services even greater. More people are showing up for food, shelter and whatever is available to help them through the loss of jobs, houses and income. The president of the AFP summed it up quite simply, “This is probably the most challenging environment that most fundraisers have seen in their lifetimes.”

Fundraising organizations represented at the convention were not very optimistic about the near future. Only 28% feel they will raise more money in 2009. That’s the worst outlook projected by charity fundraising groups in the history of the survey.
