This is a summary of the statistics produced as a result of a survey conducted by Vodafone UK.

Did you know that:

• 70% of workers believe their company does not reward new ideas, and over half (54%) say they are not formally encouraged to come up with new ideas.
• 79% of the workforce is not offered any financial incentive to innovate.
• 60% of workers are given no time at all to generate ideas.
• 24% of workers say that their ideas simply stay in their heads.
• 93% agree that new ideas and processes are essential to the very survival of UK companies.
• Two-thirds of senior managers say their organizations are innovative, while only 38% of skilled manual workers feel the same way.
• 67% of young employees (aged 16-25) think of themselves as innovative, only 30% of employers agree.

In terms of age, over-55s are the most likely to come up with ideas at least once a day (12%) and in terms of seniority 23% of senior managers and professionals say they come up with new ideas at least daily with 51% of senior managers having ideas at least once per week as well as 37% of both middle management and new graduates.

But ideas are not the preserve of those in suits, 17% of unskilled manual workers, 18% of clerical staff and 22% of skilled manual workers also come up with new ideas at least once per week also.

Departments that generate most of the new ideas are Research & Development (43%), IT/Systems (42%) and Marketing (40%) with the Board next (35%).

The place where workers say they are most likely to come up with a new idea is at their desk (29%), followed by travelling in a car or train (24%) and in bed (20%). Interestingly, women seem to be more likely to come up with ideas in bed than men (22%, compared with 16%).

Respondents were realistic about their chances of coming up with a good idea while in the pub (4%) or on holiday (2%). The busy cluttered office is one of the least likely places for a new idea to be formed (3%). The research also finds that workers are more likely to be creative when the workplace is informal and relaxed (32%), with flexible hours (23%) following in importance. Over half (55%) of all respondents are more likely to come up with new ideas when given more time to think.

Not so long a go it looked like gaming laptop computers were only procurable from certain resellers and they were generally custom built. I pretty much doubt they sold in any earth shattering volumes but they sure produced tons of cash for the system builders. Despite that everyone probably wanted one. In my perspective they were the best laptop computers about. Despite the buzz caused I don’t think they were good sellers because I don’t believe purchasers would buy laptop computers as an alternative to desktop computers as they were not really good value. Local manufacturers cannot compete with them in swaying potential purchasers to buy laptop computers. I’m rather confident that local sellers will have to reduce their prices for them to compete. With the resources at their disposal they could effortlessly get rid of smaller competition. In my opinion if anyone’s prepared to pay a lot of money the brand name always comes out victorious.

The notebooks being released by brand name companies are all competing for the best laptop computer title. It’s nothing new that there are people on this planet who play poker for a living. The golf ball roots are harbored on the Eastern Coast in Scotland, where golf balls were first made of hardwood like Beech and Boxroot. If you are like me, or I should say, as I once was, then you probably buy a monthly allotment of supposedly fresh leads of people who are looking to start a home business. The bacteria dentists use to determine whether treatment of a root canal infection has been successful, namely the absence of discomfort and pain; x-ray evidence that abscessed areas, granulomas and cysts have completely filled in with new bone; and trust that the medicaments used in producing these results completely eradicated bacteria, all proved inadequate when such teeth were subjected to further testing by Dr. Price and his group.

Testing for the preseence of bacteria in root canal, after the use of disinfectants which appeared to have controlled the infections, proved that the organisms had not been eradicated.

Dr. Price, in making cultures after the use of over 100 different medicaments, including different strengths of each, found only eight which had negative responses after 24 hours, and only two after 48 hours of incubation; longer periods were found to be ineffective as medicaments lost their disinfecting power.

The two most efficient medicaments proved to be objectionable - silver nitrate because it turned teeth black and formalin because it was very irritating and painful to patients and destructive to surrounding tissues.

Though culturing to determine whether bacteria had been killed was formerly taught and practiced, I know of no dentists using such a testing procedure today.

Dr. Price in another series of tests took extracted infected teeth and treated them (much easier to do aseptically outside of the mouth) and found when these teeth were sectioned their dentin and cementum were still infected.

In still another investigation, Dr. Price made biopsy sections at and below the gum line and found bacteria present not only in the root of the teeth and their protective cementum but also in the first millimeter or two of adjacent bone. The importance of this factor in causing cavitations in bone after extractions will be discussed in a later chapter.

Dr. Price noted future developments might bring forth medicaments which are more successful. You will all be thinking that antibiotics are certainly the answer. However, antibiotics have not proven able to effectively penetrate the dentin tubules, cementum and adjacent bone sufficiently to eradicate these bacteria.

Testing of new medicaments, and current efforts such as new laser treatment methods, are of course necessary and were anticipated by Dr. Price.

All of these root canal side-effect problems should not deter the profession from continuing to explore new methods of how to save teeth. While we cannot learn how to save teeth by extracting them, Dr. Price fortunately has shown us ways to test procedures to prove whether infection has been eradicated in teeth we think we have saved.
