Search Engine Optimization (commonly referred to as SEO) is one of the best waysto get traffic to your site. The best thing about SEO is that the traffic you get is free! If you manage to get top ten listings in a major search engine like Google, you can get hundreds or even thousands of visitors to your site. Depending on your site’s subject matter, you might even be able to start earning a significant income purely from the popularity of your site. For example, if you have a site on jokes you might be able to get a substantial amount of traffic, but you’re unlikely to earn a huge income. On the other hand, if you have a top ranking site on Google for the keyword phrase “web hosting”, you’ll be able to earn at least $1-2 million (probably more like $3-4 million) per year from that site alone. However, to get into the top 10 in Google for the phrase “web hosting” is extremely difficult, you would need to be a search engine pro to do it - even then, it might take you two years to get there with a team of 5 people working around the clock. A profitable site will be based on a good keyword phrase, a good topic (or subject material) and be different enough to stand out from the competition. However, there are a few key factors which are unlikely to change dramatically: Keywords phrases should be one of the most important considerations when you are optimizing your site (remember that for each page of the site you should concentrate on one or two keyword phrases). Keyword phrases (which you want to get to the top of the search engine for)should be well researched. Key factors for getting to the top of Google: The keyword phrase in the title of the page - you should have the phrase in the title of the page. The keyword phrase in the text of the page - you want the keyword phrase to be up the top of the page, preferably as high up the top of the code on the page as possible. You also want the phrase repeated a few times on the page. Don’t worry about how many times, just at least 3-4 times and more if you think it fits in naturally with the content of the page. Include the keyword phrase in a large font heading with H1 tags (this may make a small difference). Links into your site from other sites (covered in more detail below). Links within your site (covered below). Links to other sites (covered below). Links into your site from other sites This is probably the most important factor for getting good search engine listings. You need to have good links coming into your site from other sites.

You want those links to be from popular sites that also have lots of links coming into them. Google uses a Page Rank system which is a rough measure of how many links are coming into your site. You want links from sites that have good Page Rank. Creating 50 of your own sites and interlinking them won’t increase your page ranking. How do you get links from other sites? The main ways are to: Create a great site that people naturally want to link to, Get an affiliate program so people can link to your site and get paid, swap links with other sites, get listed in directories such as dmoz.org and buy links from people who have sites with a high PR (Page Rank). Again, we’ll be talking about this in more depth in another issue of the newsletter. The most important consideration with incoming links is that you need to have the keyword phrase in the link that directs traffic to you your site. Getting listed in directories such as DMOZ (Open Directory Project) can also help you significantly in getting a good search engine ranking in Google. Links within your site

It helps once again if you have the keyword phrase in the links to each page of your site. For example, let’s say you have a site on baby products and you have one page where you are trying to optimize for the keyword phrase “cheap baby supplies”. You should make sure that links that come into that page have the phrase “cheap baby supplies” so that your links look like this: Click here for cheap baby supplies

Links to other sites You can improve your page rank if you link to other sites that have high search engine listings for the phrase that you are trying to optimize for. Note: it can also hinder if you link to pages that are off-topic. For example, you don’t want to link to a chemical arms factory from your baby supplies site. Some other things you don’t want to do (and some things that make no difference at all) are: - Repeating the keyword phrase multiple times on the page unless it makes contextual sense. - Placing hidden links on your site - for example, links that are the same color as the background of the page won’t be recognized by Google. - Optimizing your site too carefully - if it’s obvious that you have optimized your site for Google (for example, if all your incoming links use the same keyword phrase) you may be penalized. Google looks for sites that are more ‘natural’ in their structure, so if all links look the same this won’t look like an organic site to Google robots and you may be penalized for it. - Despite popular opinion, Meta tags don’t really help at all. However, the description tag is important because that is the description that will appear in your listing on Google. Finally, you may have heard of people using automated pages and or ‘cloaked pages’ to get high search engine rankings in Google. Personally, I don’t believein taking this approach as it’s a non-sustainable way of getting high search engine rankings (that’s not say that some people who aren’t very successful at it). This is a sneaky way to make it to the top of of the search engine rankings, but it can work; one guy I know is earning several million dollars per year using this technique. So it can work, but as I mentioned before, I don’t think it’s sustainable and the Google engine doesn’t take kindly to it.

How do I submit my site to the search engines? My personal philosophy is that if your site is not found naturally by following links then it is unlikely to rank in the search engines - I don’t usually bother submitting to search engines. So that’s the basics of how to get to the top of the search engines. We’ll have a look at the more advanced stuff later on. It takes a lot of time knowledge and dedication to get there but once you master it, SEO is a fantastic way to gettraffic and make money on the web.

And for keyword phrases that are right down the list, you will often be able to get a number 1, 2 or 3 listing for 5 cents.

As early as 1897, Benzene a highly flammable, clear, colorless liquid with its innocuous sweet smell was recognized as a cause for disease. Subsequent research has shown that Benzene was camouflaged as an unrecognized killer in plastics, resins, rubbers, paints, detergents, drugs, lubricants, synthetic fabrics, pesticides and especially in the products used by the petroleum industry.

As a natural compound of gasoline and crude oil, Benzene has been seen to have caused the most debilitating effects mainly on hapless workers exposed to its toxic effects. Lurking as a common chemical in numerous commercial and consumer products Benzene has rightly come under the scanner with it being classified by the Federal Environment Protection Agency as a known human carcinogen.

Statistics supplied by the National Cancer Institute support this claim by quoting sobering figures of 12,000 and odd patients who have been diagnosed with AML - Acute Myelogenous or Myeloid Leukemia also known as Myelogenous Leukemia, as a result of their proximity to Benzene. That Benzene and AML are connected has been backed with medical proof that confirms emphatically that AML is not hereditary but is a time bomb ticking in an unsuspecting handler of Benzene. Characterized by symptoms of skin rash, fatigue, prolonged bleeding, bone pain and weight loss AML besieges the body with malignant blood forming tissues that lead to an excess of immature white blood cells. As the malignant cells begin to replace bone marrow and a crippling of normal cells begins, death is only a question of time for the stricken.

At a recent homeschool convention, I had the opportunity to speak to many moms about ways to think “Outside the Books”, when it comes to our homeschooling. I wasn’t advocating never using textbooks or changing programs, but rather, helping them see that there are many ways to “show what you know”. It is also important for us to help our children see that real learning happens all the time, not just when they are filling out worksheets or sitting at our school table.

One way we have added a bit of spice to our homeschooling over the years is with a weekly Math Lab day. On one day a week I plan for us to leave the math curriculum on the shelf and do some hands-on learning with games, crafts, etc. Math Lab days are also great for using math software you have sitting around, but may never get around to using. Or how about those math games you have purchased, but usually remain on the shelf collecting dust?

Just what kinds of things can you do on Math Lab Day? I’m glad you asked!
Young children

* Counting games with candy, Legos, or anything else you might have lying around.
* “War” with a regular deck of cards or make your own deck with numbers to 100 and maybe a “wild card” or two to make things more exciting.
* If you have them, Snap Cubes (a popular manipulative) are great to play with, making “trains” of different color patterns. You start the pattern, and your child adds on to the train following the pattern. Then let them start a pattern and you finish it.
* Any board game that requires dice and counting.
* Use standard and non-standard items to measure things around the house. “Hey, Mom, did you know the cat is 50 paper clips long?”
* Kitchen - baking involves using lots of real life fractions - while you’re at it,how about sharing the “fruits” of your math lesson with a neighbor!
* Play store

Elementary thru Middle School

* Math with Literature! We love Sir Cumference, A Place for Zero, Equal Schmequal, and other titles in the math adventure series.
* Our favorite math games are S’math and Knock Out! from Muggin’s Math - we just purchased their new fraction games, too.
* Board games, including Monopoly, PayDay!, Sequence and more.
* Card games like UNO and War. A favorite is to use flashcards with math facts as our “war” deck.
* Videos: Multiplication Rock, Money Rock
* Play store and many of the other activities from the above list
* If you have any of the handheld, electronic math toys, Lab Day is a good time to make sure they are put to use
* Computer games - Money Town, Math Blaster, etc.
* Use activities from “Family Math”, “Math for Smarty Pants” or “Games for Learning Math.”
* Plan an imaginary trip and use a map to figure how many miles you will travel.
* For kids interested in the Stock Market, you can use Lab Day each week to track and check on a couple of stocks, plotting their progress on a graph.
* Visit one of the fun, free math game sites online like the Math Arcade at funbrain.com. There are lots more free websites for online learning in my book, Using the Internet In Your Homeschool.

One other idea that we’ve implemented, not just for Lab Day, but as a way to add some more real life application to our math lessons is the “Mommy Bank”. I gave each of my kids a blank check or savings registry book. Their allowance is “direct deposited” into their Mommy Bank account. They must add the amount each week. They also deposit money received for their birthday, odd jobs, etc. When they purchase something, I pay for it and we deduct it from their account in the Mommy Bank. Of course, older children often prefer to keep their money with them, but this works well when they are younger or for those kids who are not yet ready to carry around cash.

The above lists are just a few of the things we have done on Math Lab Day over the years. Writing this article has reminded me that my own homeschooling has fallen into a bit of a rut. Sounds like tomorrow needs to be an “Outside the Book” kind of day!

Is Drew Rosenhaus bad for the NFL? The way I see it he is no different than the hundreds of other NFL agents that ply their trade without media recognition. Sure, he is more aggressive, but the techniques he uses have been around for years. The holdout is nothing new; many players hold out each year in hopes of receiving more money.

What sets Rosenhaus apart isn’t what he does, but how he does it. Most agents(and players) prefer their negotiations to be private. Rosenhaus’s players on the other hand, go the media as much as they can. Terrell Owens is on TV these days more than most reality stars. Rosenhaus places his players in the media spotlight, hoping that media coverage will spur the team owners and managers to give in to his demands. Does it work? The answer has to be yes.

This returns me to my original question: Is Drew Rosenhaus bad for the NFL? As I just stated, Rosenhaus’s high pressure, public negotiating style worked in the past. It worked because owners gave him the money, not because he is imbued with any special powers. It is human nature to want more money, and thus players turn to Drew Rosenhaus because he has had success in the past with getting money to players such as Clinton Portis. However, Drew Rosenhaus is merely the facilitator in this exchange. His tactics are designed to force the owners to respond, usually by giving the player what he demands. Rosenhaus gets away with demanding more because the owners give him more. Ultimately, Drew Rosenhaus is not a villain but a natural reaction to athletes wanting more money.

Football contract negotiations, of all things, do not breed heroes or villains. Nobody is a bad guy, and on the other hand, there is no “good guy”, although the media may attempt to label people as such. Rosenhaus is neither a good nor a bad guy, and likewise is neither good nor bad for the NFL. As long as a means (Rosenhaus) exists to get more money, athletes will try it. And as long as the owners keep paying, Rosenhaus will continue to exist. In fact, Rosenhaus may only be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to trying new strategies to get more money. But ultimately, you can’t judge him as “bad,” for he exists because of the owners and the players, not vice versa.
